The contract to finance, build, own and operate a waste disposal facility on Grand Cayman has been awarded to US-based Wheelabrator Technologies Inc., of West Hampton, New Hampshire.
The company, which is owned by Waste Management Inc., is tasked with developing a comprehensive solid waste disposal management and waste-to-energy facility for Grand Cayman.
Department of Environmental Health Director Roydell Carter confirmed the grant today (Friday, 24 December) after notifying the other nine companies that had submitted bids. All ten had been required to include an outline of solid waste management options for the Sister Islands in their proposals.
According to the tender document, the new facility should "generate electricity and other green energy by-products and implement a recycling program. It must be environmentally friendly, accept all types of waste, handle newly-generated waste and effectively manage and reduce all existing landfill waste at the George Town landfill site."
Minister for District Administration, Works and Gender Affairs the Hon. Julianna O'Connor-Conolly called the contract grant a major step forward for sustainable waste management in the Cayman Islands: "We are certainly looking forward to move ahead on this important and long-awaited project. I thank everyone involved for making it happen," she added.
